Mary Horn is a Dominican Sister, one time teacher, now painter and organic gardener.
Born in Waimate in 1937, Mary has lived in a number of places in New Zealand.
She Began painting in 1992, and has worked and lived at Teschemakers, North Otago, since then.
Her painting explores the spiritual landscape that is the journey we essentially make alone and with others in a paradox of certainty and uncertainty, order and chaos, with continual beginnings and endings. This is expressed in colour and image that moves beyond visual reality to another reality that can only be imagined in symbol which if one allows its power can give but a glimpse of that 'other' we know and don't know but seek on our journey to the infinite in an infinite universe.
This inner landscape is related to the physical landscape of North Otago, which is a deep influence. She says "I am surrounded by fertile black soil, stunning market gardens, rolling grain fields and at the same time craggy limestone cliffs where the hawks nest. The stunning interplay of light creates a powerful juxtaposition of dark and light."
Mediums used are oil on canvas or hardboard for painting.
Charcoal and graphite for drawing, the charcoal is linden made from trees on the property.
